skeleton crew

skeleton-crewRow and/or ski at least 31,000 meters between October 25 and October 31 to get on the honor board and receive your certificate.  | rowing machine on the doomed titanic <1912>

still have about 10,000 to go with two days left \ great way to keep fit for the head of the occoquan, our last regatta for the season / we’ll be headed indoors in just a few weeks 😦

anecdotes of destiny

imagetwo of the five stories in anecdotes of destiny <1958> by isak dinesen were adapted for the screen \ the danish film “babette’s feast” won the academy award for best foreign film in 1987 / orson welles directed the 1968 french film “the immortal story” \ easily the most satisfying to read <& fun to watch despite the austere characters> was “babette’s feast” / character- & atmosphere-driven with a very simple plot that was effectively captured on screen

eastend mile

chanced upon this really good local band at “rock the block” street festival in squirrel hill <mr. rogers’ neighborhood in pittsburgh> on a beautiful full moon evening \ they remind me of the pop fusion | smooth jazz bands of the 80s / so surprising to me that the band is made up of twentysomethings \ whom i assume have an aversion to whatever their parents appreciated in their youth / & especially smooth jazz <think kenny g, ugh> \ but eastend mile is worth a listen / pretty solid band, solid sax player!

we all have a story to tell and some are worth sharing & preserving / “storycorps” had its beginnings with a “storybooth” at grand central terminal in nyc back in 2003 / it has been broadcasted on npr since 2005 <fridays on morning edition> \ StoryCorps’ mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.  / stopping in pittsburgh, the storycorps mobile booth is stationed at the senator john heinz history center from oct 13 to nov 11 \ mulling about participating…

a book about the nordic way

the nordic theory of everything <2016> anu partanen, finnish journalist who is now an american citizen / explanations of how finland is able to provide high quality free education and a reliable social safety net to its citizens \ enviable, yes / a model for the u.s.? \ i’m not sure / i think it is easier to get agreement in a homogeneous culture like finland / learnings for the u.s.? \ absolutely

a book of screenplays

four plays of ingmar bergman <1960> it was noted in the catalog page that the screenplays in this book are the same as the ones used in filming except that the original scripts contained the number of shots necessary for each sequence and that it contains sequences & dialogues that are not in the final film \ never seen any of these / reading the screenplays made me only mildly interested in watching the movies themselves
